Dry Needling

Dry needling is a minimally invasive therapy used to treat mobility issues, pain, muscle injury or repetitive strains. In a dry needling session, a trained therapist uses a dry thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin. No medication is injected, hence the name “dry needling.” Instead, the needle is used to stimulate the muscle tissue and the connective tissue in and around a trigger point. Trigger points are painful, contracted knots formed when a muscle is stressed or injured.

The goal of dry needling is to release trigger points to relieve pain and/or improve the patient’s range of motion. This therapy is believed to interrupt certain nerve signals in the trigger point and to reduce muscle tension, pain and address dysfunctions of the motor end plates. Motor end plates are the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles.
