What is Sports Medicine?

Many athletes find themselves in need of a sports medicine physician at some point in their athletic careers. These patients might suffer from a variety of injuries, such as sprains, groin pulls, shin splints, ACL tears, tennis elbow, fractures, knee and shoulder injuries, tendonitis, concussions, or cartilage injuries. In addition, sports medicine physicians can provide advice on injury prevention, exercise, and nutrition.

If you find yourself having sustained an injury during exercise or sports, it is probably best to seek the help of an emergency room first. Significant injuries, with symptoms such as severe pain, swelling, or numbness, likely need immediate attention. Once pain and swelling has subsided, or if your injury is minor, it may be time to contact a sports medicine physician to establish a treatment plan.

Many injuries from sports do not require surgery. In some cases, minimally-invasive surgery can be used to repair torn tissue or realign bones. At Pontchartrain Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, our sports medicine physicians are familiar with a wide variety of sports injuries, and how to treat them. Our physicians utilize advanced techniques, such as arthroscopic surgery, fracture management techniques, and sports injury management techniques, to treat each patient’s unique needs.

We offer a broad range of orthopedic services, including total joint replacements, arthroscopic surgery, fracture management, and viscous injections. The team at Pontchartrain Orthopedics & Sports Medicine offers a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating your orthopedic needs.
